ANALYSIS OF THE EXTRACT OF THE SEEDS OF CASSIA OCCIDENTALIS FOR ALKALOIDS, Is A Well-Researched Topic, It Is To Be Used As A Guide Or Framework For Your Research. (download in EPUB or PDF format).

ABSTRACT

The isolation and detection of alkaloids from the plant seed of cassia
occidentalis from the Leguminosae family were carried out by solvent extraction method using a soxhlet extractor. The dried powdered seed was sieved, weighed (70g in 10g each), wrapped in filter paper, and was made to pass through heating for 2 hours each as n-hexane served as extraction solvent.

The extract was mixed with acid boiled in a water bath, filtered and the crude alkaloid was recovered. Purification and thin layer chromatographic separation process was not carried out. The crude alkaloid extracted from the seed of the plant was used. The test for alkaloid was carried out using Drangendorff’s reagent, Mayer’s reagent, and Wagner’s reagent.

The following reagent shows a positive test. Drangendorff’s reagent yielded an orange precipitate, Mayer’s reagent yielded cream precipitation while Wagner’s reagent yielded reddish precipitate. The presence of these precipitates indicates the presence of alkaloids in the seed of Cassia occidentalis.
