ABSTRACT

This research aims at investigating the critical assessment of the
importance of studying cooperative laws and rules. (A case stud of
Federal Co-operative College in Oji-River L.G.A of Enugu state).

Among the specific purpose are: To determine the impact of the cooperative law in every co-operative establishment; To find out the law
meant for co-operative establishment in Nigeria; To examine the limit
provided by the law that differentiates it from other laws; To investigate the ways in which studying of co-operative laws and rules has contributed in improvement of co-operative in Nigeria, To find out
problems facing by the co-operative in studying laws and rules.

The Taro Yamani formula was used to obtain the final sample size. The
data used were: primary data which comprise questionnaires, oral
interviews, and secondary data which textbooks, magazines, catalogs.

The data were presented, analyzed, and interpreted using percentages
and ratios. The institutions sampled were students of Federal Cooperative College Oji-River; members of Fadama co-operative society
Inyi women, members of Nwanne di na mba co-operative society.

The major findings were: Excessive studying of co-operative laws and rules are adequate in the co-operative establishment; the financial assistance in form of soft loans, grants, and tax exemption, help in education and training of the co-operators in Nigeria; Train existing staff to cooperative to take over from government staff regarding
development of the state, poor contributions of co-operative laws and
rules in straining institutions such as co-operative college, polytechnics
and universities; the apex societies are responsible to supervise the
co-operative societies.
